Common Mistakes in University Applications — Avoid These

Most rejections aren't because a student wasn't good enough. They're because of unforced errors — the kind a second pair of eyes catches in ten seconds. These are the nine we see most often, in the order they cost applicants the most points.
1. Generic 'Why us' essays
Naming a school's mascot isn't research. Name faculty, courses, labs, traditions. If your essay could work for another university with a find-and-replace, it will hurt you.
2. A résumé-shaped personal statement
You already submitted a résumé. The essay is where you show how you think — one moment, deeply reflected on, beats ten activities listed.
3. Weak recommendation letters
Ask the teacher who knows you, not the one with the biggest title. Provide a brag sheet with 3 stories you'd like referenced.
4. Missing a deadline by a single day
Most portals close at 23:59 local university time — not yours. Submit 72 hours early. Every year we see students miss by three hours because of a timezone assumption.
5. Under-listing extracurriculars
The Common App activities section allows 10 entries and 150 characters each. Use them. Family responsibilities, paid work, and self-taught projects count.
6. Ignoring financial aid deadlines
Most need-based aid deadlines are the same as or earlier than admission deadlines. Miss the CSS Profile date and you can be admitted with zero funding.
7. Not proofreading supplements
Naming the wrong university in a Why Us essay is a same-day rejection. Read every essay backwards, out loud, and by a third party.
8. Skipping the optional additional information section
Use it to explain a grade dip, a family event, a school context, or a Covid year. Admissions reads it — silence there is a missed chance to control your narrative.
9. Applying to too many reaches
A balanced list is 2 safeties, 4 matches, 3 reaches. Twelve reaches and no safeties is the fastest way to a gap year.
