A Canada study permit is one of the more predictable student visas in the world — if you file it correctly. This guide walks through the two application streams (SDS and regular), the exact documents IRCC expects, and the typical timeline for approval so you don't miss your course start date.

Are you eligible?

  • Acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
  • Proof of funds: tuition + CAD $20,635/year living expenses (2024).
  • Clean criminal record (police clearance certificate).
  • Medical exam from a panel physician.
  • Intent to leave Canada at end of studies (or transition to PR through PGWP).

SDS vs regular stream

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) processes in 20 days on average for eligible countries (India, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Morocco, Pakistan, Senegal, and several others). SDS requires an upfront GIC of CAD $20,635, one year of tuition paid, and IELTS 6.0/each band (or equivalent). Regular stream takes 8–12 weeks.

Step-by-step

  1. Accept your DLI offer and pay first-year tuition.
  2. Open a GIC with a Canadian bank (Scotiabank, ICICI, CIBC).
  3. Take IELTS/PTE and get the score report.
  4. Complete medical exam and upload eMedical receipt.
  5. Create an IRCC secure account and complete IMM 1294.
  6. Pay the CAD $150 permit fee + CAD $85 biometrics fee.
  7. Attend biometrics appointment within 30 days.
  8. Wait for Passport Request (PPR) letter and courier your passport.

Common refusal reasons

The two biggest are weak proof of funds and an unconvincing statement of purpose. IRCC wants to see that you can pay, that your program makes sense given your background, and that you have a plan for after graduation. A generic 'Canada is a beautiful country' SOP is refused every time.

After approval

The permit is issued at the port of entry, not before you fly. Carry your Letter of Introduction, passport, offer letter, GIC confirmation, and biometrics receipt in your hand luggage.
